The 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2019

In 2018 we saw Aquaman uniting the seven seas, Han Solo making the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs, and Thanos destroying half of the universe with a single snap. It was a great year for cinematic history, but the best has yet to come. 2019 will bring us nostalgic remakes, the rise of villains, and the end of many beloved movies. So, let’s dive head first and check out what’s on the horizon for this year.

15. Detective Pikachu

Release Date: May 10, 2019

Over the past couple of years, Pokémon has seen a revival with new games and the mobile app, Pokémon Go. However, now the franchise is heading to the big screen for an all-new, live-action film.

Starring Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds as the iconic furry yellow Pikachu, the story starts when detective Harry Goodman mysteriously goes missing. His 21-year old son, Tim attempts to use his own detective skills to figure out what happened to his dad and eventually comes across a wise-cracking Pikachu. When Tim figures out that he’s the only one that can understand the detective Pikachu, they realize they were brought together for a reason. Together, they must uncover the clues hidden around Ryme City – a modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side – to save Tim’s dad and the world as they know it.

14. It: Chapter 2

Release Date: September 6, 2019

When the Loser Club defeated Pennywise and saved their town, you might have thought Stephen King’s It was over. However, 27 years later, the Loser Club is about to get a phone call that will bring them right back to the middle of the doom and gloom. All grown up, each member of the Loser Club fulfills their promise and returns to Derry in order to put an end to the shape-shifting beast once and for all.

13. The Addams Family

Release Date: October 18, 2019

2019 will be a year of remakes and one of the movies fans are most excited about is The Addams Family. Based on the comics by Charles Addams, the film is a 3D computer-animated comedy that will bring us back to the home of the macabre Addams family as they prepare for a family reunion and go head-to-head with a crafty reality-TV host. The nostalgic film will star Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams, Charlize Theron as Morticia Addams, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley Addams, and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester.

12. Us

Release Date: March 15, 2019

After shocking the world and shaking the movie industry with Get Out, Academy Award winner, Jordan Peele is embarking on his next cinematic adventure. This time though, he’s shedding the theme of race and bringing out the evil that truly lurks beneath each and every one of us.

Starring Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson and Winston Duke as her husband Gabe, Us follows the story of the Wilson family as they head to the California coast for a peaceful summer getaway. However, their vacation is far from relaxing when Adelaide starts to become haunted by an unresolved trauma from her past. When the family returns to their vacation home after a day at the beach, they discover four ominous figures holding hands in their driveway. These figures are their doppelgangers, and the terrifying monsters that are about to turn their worst nightmares into reality.

11. New Mutants

Release Date: August 2, 2019

2018 was a rough year for X-Men. The release of both Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants were constantly pushed back until we all completely forgot about them. However, it looks like the mutants are back and we’ll finally get to see them in 2019.

Taking on the horror genre, The New Mutants follows young mutants imprisoned at a creepy and horrific asylum. As the kids attempt to escape the tortures of the facility, they will also need to battle the disturbing nightmares of their past. Watch as this superhero movie tackles the realm of horror and makes us all cringe in our seats.

10. Disney’s Aladdin

Release Date: May 24, 2019

Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, and the whole gang is back for a live-action adaption of the original 1992 Disney animated movie. When a boy living on the streets of Agrabah befriends a genie and falls in love with a princess, we’ll be transported back to the beginnings of Disney movie magic. Featuring Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Will Smith as Genie, Aladdin will bring our childhood story to life.

9. Captain Marvel

Release Date: March 19, 2019

The MCU has introduced us to some amazing superheroes, but now it’s time for the women to take the lead. Captain Marvel is the franchise’s first female-led movie and will focus on the one hero Nick Fury believes can reverse Thanos’ snap.

The film takes place in 1995, prior to most of the events of the MCU, and follows Carol Danvers, a former US Air Force pilot, as she discovers her true destiny. She gets caught up in a galactic conflict between two alien worlds, the Kree and the Skrulls, and must help a young Nick Fury save Earth. However, the battle won’t be easy as the Skrulls are shapeshifting aliens that can take the form of any human, even those inside S.H.I.E.L.D.

8. Disney’s The Lion King

Release Date: July 19, 2019

For this Disney remake, we’ll adventure to the African savannah to witness the birth of a future king. Lion King will be a live-action rendition of the classic Disney story, filled with love, betrayal, tragedy, and drama. From Scar’s eventual takeover to Simba’s exile, we’ll watch as the young lion cub grows up and returns to Pride Rock to take back his throne.

Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, and Beyoncé as Nala, The Lion King will shake the world of Disney and change Pride Rock as we know it.

7. Glass

Release Date: January 18, 2019

2019 will start with a bang as M. Night Shyamalan brings together his original films, Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016) in an epic new adventure. Glass will feature Bruce Willis’ Unbreakable character, David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Prince (aka Mr. Glass), along with James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb from Split.

Following the end of Split, Mr. Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s inner superhuman figure known as the Beast in a series of escalating encounters. However, Sarah Paulson’s Dr. Ellie Staple is the orchestrator behind it all. Together, they uncover the limits of the human psyche and see what happens when the bad guys get the superhero powers.

6. Joker

Release Date: October 4, 2019

From the Suicide Squad to Thanos, we’ve seen the villains pushing the heroes aside to take the spotlight and now it’s time for us to see the origin story of the most infamous villain of them all.

The upcoming film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and will be separate from the larger DC universe. With a lower budget than other DC films, Joker will also be more of a character study that dives deep into the personality and origins of the villain. Warner Bros. even describes the movie as “an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale”.

The film will be set in the 80s and features the Clown Prince of Crime when he was a struggling comedian known as Arthur Fleck.

5. Star Wars: Episode IX

Release Date: December 20, 2019

After the solo movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, Disney is getting back to its main storyline. Star Wars: Episode IX will be the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and the ninth and final story in the Star Wars Skywalker saga.

The film will reportedly be set a year after The Last Jedi with the return of Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Poe, and surprisingly, Luke Skywalker. Although there isn’t much known about the film yet, we can expect it to be a bittersweet ending to the series that George Lucas started over 40 years ago.

4. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Release Date: July 5, 2019

Spider-Man was emotionally dusted out of existence in Avengers: Infinity War. However, we don’t need our own spidey-senses to know that the web-slinging Avenger will return for his next movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will have the spidey gang traveling far from home to Venice, Italy where we’ll see a fun romance sparking between Peter Parker and Michelle. Eventually, though, the trip will be interrupted by Nick Fury as he shoots a tranquilizer dart at Ned and recruits Peter to help him fight “the Elementals”.

We’ll also see Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio joining Spider-Man to fight Hydro-Man, a new villain that emerges from the waters of Venice to attack the city and cause chaos and destruction. You can also expect to see Spider-Man’s new black stealth suit and Mysterio’s iconic armor as they take on evil.

However, according to fans that got an exclusive look at the movie’s trailer, there is no mention of Infinity War or the decimation of half the universe during Spider-Man: Far From Home.

3. Shazam

Release Date: April 5, 2019

When 14-year-old Billy Batson is chosen to become the champion of good by the Wizard Shazam, his whole life turns upside down. With a bolt of lightning and the word Shazam, Billy transforms into an adult superhero empowered with the magical abilities of six mythical figures. So, do you believe in magic in a young boy’s heart?

Shazam will feature Billy Batson’s transition into the mighty superhero as he fights the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Mixing comedy and adventure, this DC film is expected to take home the crown and please the gods.

2. Toy Story 4

Release Date: June 21, 2019

After Toy Story 3 jerked with our emotions and made us all cry waves of tears, it seemed as though our childhood was over. As Andy grew up and headed to college, so did we. However, it’s time to take the toys out of the attic because Woody, Buzz, and the entire gang are back for another adventure.

This time, a new toy named Forky is along for the ride as Woody starts to question his place in the world. Both old and new friends will come together on one last journey to discover just how big the world is.

1. Avengers: Endgame

Release Date: April 26, 2019

With a single snap, half of the world disappeared. We watched as Captain America lost his best friend, as Rocket held onto his son’s last word, and the people of Wakanda mourned their king. It was the biggest, shocking, and most depressing moment of cinematic history, and we’re all waiting to see what the Russo Brothers have in store for us next.

As the Avengers struggle to save the universe, fans are all waiting for the most anticipated movie of the year. Avengers: Endgame will be the true gamechanger.

Will we see the death of Captain America, the rise of a new captain, or the demise of all of our favorite characters? This is the end of the Avengers as we know it, and we all can’t wait to see who saves the day.
