The God of Mischief has constantly walked the line of good and evil throughout the MCU. From trying to kill his brother and banishing his father to teaming up with the Avengers and sacrificing his life, we never know what side of the fight Loki is going to end up on. However, Marvel may have cleared up some of this confusion for us.
Reddit user, rhowena noticed that Marvel very quietly changed Loki’s official biography on their site, Marvel.com. Now the God of Mischief’s biography states that Thanos was actually influencing Loki’s mind and fueling his hatred for Thor.
According to the bio, Loki ended up at the Sanctuary through a wormhole created by the Bifrost in the first Thor film. Here, Loki met the Other, ruler of the Chitauri, and Thanos. After seeing the Asgardian’s raw anger and family trauma, Thanos offered Loki the opportunity to rule over Earth, his brother’s favorite realm, in exchange for the Tesseract. To help with his quest, the Mad Titan gifted the God of Mischief with a Scepter that held the Mind Stone and allowed Loki to control minds and influence others. However, “unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth.”
This surprise proves that Loki was actually being manipulated by Thanos and therefore none of his actions in The Avengers (2012) were entirely his own. The Mind Stone held within the Scepter was enhancing his dark emotions, his anger for Thor and Odin, and his vengeful ambitions. Essentially, it was making his personal family drama much more potent and forced him to lash out at Thor and the Avengers in a way that he typically wouldn’t have.
As we head into the new year, it seems as though Loki has also changed his New Year’s resolution. The new biography completely changes his personality, character, and intentions in the MCU, painting him in a more positive, altruistic light.
