The Super Bowl is no longer just for sports fans. It’s also a place for film geeks and movie lovers to find out a little bit more about some upcoming new films. However, with Super Bowl commercials costing about $5.05 million for a 30-second slot, not every production company can land a spot. This year, Warner Bros. and Sony seem to be sitting out the game and instead, we can expect to see ads from the big shot studios: Disney/Marvel, Paramount, and Universal.
Hobbs & Shaw – CONFIRMED
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to Twitter and confirmed that the first Hobbs and Shaw trailer will debut during the Super Bowl. However, it looks like Universal jumped the gun and released its first promotional clip two days before it’s set to air during the big game.
When Brixton, played by Idris Elba wreaks havoc on the city, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) will have to team up to track him down. With action-packed fights, explosions, cars, guns, and building climbing, Johnson wasn’t kidding when he said it will be “the biggest showdown the Fast and Furious franchise has ever seen”.
Dwayne Johnson has confirmed that Hobbs and Shaw will still nab a “dope” spot during the Super Bowl.
Avengers: Endgame – RUMORED
Marvel has a history of grand reveals, and what could be bigger than dropping the second Avengers: Endgame trailer during the biggest and most watched game of the year? An Infinity War trailer released during the Super Bowl last year, and fans think that the Russo Brothers would jump on the opportunity to do the same grand reveal.
With Endgame releasing in a couple of months, we still haven’t seen very much of the plot or the details of the film. If Marvel Studios releases a trailer during the Super Bowl, we might finally get to see if Stark survives or how Scott Lang got out of the Quantum Realm.
Toy Story 4 – CONFIRMED
After Toy Story 3 jerked with our emotions and made us all cry tsunami waves of tears, it seemed as though our childhood was over. As Andy grew up and headed to college, so did we. However, it’s time to take the toys back out of the attic because Buzz, Woody, and the entire gang are back for an all-new adventure.
There haven’t been many details released about the film, but Disney and Pixar announced that fans will finally get their sneak peek on Sunday. However, Disney seems to be bypassing the expensive ad fees by showing the Toy Story 4 trailer after the game. So, stay tuned after the game and catch a glimpse into the movie that will take us all back to our childhood.
Aladdin – RUMORED
Disney has a slew of live-action films releasing this year and have been very coy with what they’ve shown us about each movie. We’ve only seen the sands of Agrabah, the animals of Pride Rock, and Dumbo’s circus. So, it is very likely Disney will use the Super Bowl to give us some more action, storyline, or plots about one of their upcoming live-action films.
It has been confirmed that Disney will have an “undisclosed” number of commercials during the Super Bowl and according to rumors, Aladdin seems to be the most likely of the Disney live-action films to make its debut at the Super Bowl. This means that we could potentially see Will Smith as the blue Genie or learn more about the journey that lies ahead of Aladdin and his friends.
Wonder Park – CONFIRMED
Looking to nab a cheaper pregame spot, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon will show viewers a new look at their upcoming animation, Wonder Park before the game even starts.
The film follows the story of a girl who loses her sense of wonder and imagination after the death of her mother. However, she’s about to start believing in the unbelievable again when a magical amusement park brings all of her creations to life. Along the ride, she’ll have to bring the park out of the darkness and take on the “chimpanzombies” with her new animal friends.
Wonder Park is set to hit theaters on March 15, 2019, and a television series based on the film will release on Nickelodeon afterward.
Alita: Battle Angel – RUMORED
This seems to be the most surprising out of all the trailers on the list, but rumors suggest that Fox will use the Super Bowl to unleash an all-out ad campaign for their upcoming film. Since Alita hits theaters on February 14, a couple of weeks after the big game, it would be the perfect opportunity for Fox to send one last push out to its fans.
Alita: Battle Angel is set several centuries in the future as Alita is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by cyber-doctor, Ido. Although Ido helps Alita recover, she awakens with no memory of who she is or the world around her. As she learns more about herself and Iron City, she’ll have to defend herself and the world against the people of her past.
Hanna – CONFIRMED
Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that they will be releasing a 60-second trailer for their new drama Hanna sometime during the third quarter of the big game.
The TV show Hanna will adapt the 2011 film of the same name and center around Hanna, a girl raised by her father to fight off their dangerous pursuers. One day, she heads out of isolation and into the outside world to live like a normal girl and make her very first friend. However, Hanna’s travels alert a CIA operative of her whereabouts and her vacation quickly turns upside down. Hanna must evade the government’s pursuits and uncover the truth behind who she really is before time runs out.
The first episode of Hanna will be available for Prime members to stream immediately following the Super Bowl. This will give fans a preview of the show and encourage everyone to show up for its full series release in March.
Game of Thrones – RUMORED
We’ve seen seconds of footage and a teaser about Game of Thrones Season 8 and fans believe that we could finally get the first official trailer during the big game.
HBO does have a tradition of releasing trailers during the Super Bowl and even dropped a Westworld Season 2 trailer during last year’s game. Therefore, it isn’t completely absurd to think they’ll do the same with the final season of Game of Thrones.
Although there is no evidence or confirmation of the suspected trailer, Game of Thrones does release soon and it would be great publicity for the network to utilize the big game to have all eyes on Winterfell.
